Arona
The little town of Arona stands guard over Lake Maggiore in a dominant position on a promontory. The old centre has kept its pretty squares, narrow streets and magnificent villas like Villa Ponti, today an international centre for major art exhibitions and classical music concerts.
High above Arona, and visible from the lake for miles, is the huge statue of San Carlo (St Charles Borromeo), 23.40 metres high, the symbol of the town and place of pilgrimage for many Catholics.
