Villa Taranto - Nature in all its Glory
The botanical gardens of Villa Taranto: a harmonious blend of an English garden and a Baroque Italianate botanical garden, with statues, fountains, water features, symmetry and well-cared for flower beds. It was commissioned by a Scottish Royal Archer of the Queen of England, Mr Neal Boyd McEacharn, a Linnaean academic and botany lover who searched for many years for the perfect place to realise his dream of creating one of the most famous gardens in the whole of Europe.
In the 1930s, in Pallanza, he discovered the ideal place to make his dreams come true: despite the state of decay of Villa Crocetta, which later became Villa Taranto, he purchased the home and grounds and dedicated the rest of his life to planning, building and decorating its gardens.
Upon his death it was donated to the Italian state and today is carefully cared for by the Villa Taranto Garden Association. The magazine “The Needs”called it the loveliest botanical garden in the world. An avenue of conifers leads to the Fountain of Cherubs, then crosses a maze of tulips or dahlias, according to the season, and continues along a relaxing walkway to the winter gardens. Those who don’t want to walk uphill must pass the turnstile that leads to the entrance of the house, where you can visit the herb garden with over 40 cabinets containing plants kept by the first gardener of the villa, a refreshment area, a ticket kiosk, car park and a plant nursery for those who want to purchase seeds or plants from the gardens of the villa.
